Eleutherodactylus karlschmidti Grant, 1931, Copeia, 1931: 55. Holotype: UMMZ 73426 (formerly C. Grant 1483), by original designation and according to Peters, 1952, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 539: 14. Type locality: "Luquillo Forest [=Bosque Experimental de Luquillo], Eastern Porto Rico [= Puerto Rico]".

Eastern Puerto Rico as well as the western mountins, 45-630 m elevation.

In the Eleutherodactylus orcutti group, according to Shreve and Williams, 1963, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 129: 326-327; the Eleutherodactylus orcutti group was not recognized by Schwartz, 1967, Stud. Fauna Curaçao and other Caribb. Is., 24: 56, or Crombie, 1977, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 90: 194-204. Sole member of the Eleutherodactylus karlschmidti group, according to Joglar, 1983, Caribb. J. Sci., 19: 37. In the Eleutherodactylus auriculatus section, Eleutherodactylus martinicensis series, unassigned to species group, according to Hedges, 1989, in Woods (ed.), Biogeograph. W. Indies: 327. In Eleutherodactylus (Euhyas), unassigned to species group by Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 226. Reported as extinct by Joglar and Burrowes, 1996, in Powell and Henderson (eds.), Contr. W. Indian Herpetol.: 371-380. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) richmondi species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 61.
