Hylodes auriculatus Cope, 1862, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 14: 152. Syntypes: by original designation, "Mus. Smithsonian, (No. 5207.) Philadelphia Academy [now lost?].", presumably lost as not noted in recent USNM or ANSP type lists. Type locality: "Eastern Cuba".

Distribution

Widespread on Cuba and Isla de Pinos (= Isla de Juventud), sea level to 1300 m elevation.

In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) auriculatus species series, Eleutherodactylus auriculatus group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 55. Díaz and Cadíz, 2008, Guía Taxon. Anf. Cuba, 4: 111-112, provided a brief account, illustration, and map. Rodríguez, Vences, Nevado, Machordom, and Verheyen, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 54: 179-186, suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that this taxon is composed of at least 4 species, which form a paraphyletic series with respect to Eleutherodactylus bartonsmithi and Eleutherodactylus principalis.
