Syntypes: ZMUC, by original designation; including ZMUC R1182 (St. Croix), R1183-84 (St. John), R177, R1196 (St. Thomas), R1197 (Vieques), according to Schwartz, 1969, Stud. Fauna Curaçao and other Caribb. Is., 30: 101. Type localities: "St. Croix", "St. Thomas", and "St. Jan" and "Vieques", Virgin Islands.

Distribution

Islands of the Puerto Rico Bank; widespread in Puerto Rico at low to intermediate elevations; known from the islands of Vieques, Culebra, St. Thomas, St. John, Tortola, St. Croix, and Virgin Gorda as well as Frenchmans Cay and Guana I.; introduced into Panama.

Comment

In the Eleutherodactylus auriculatus group according to Schwartz, 1969, Stud. Fauna Curaçao and other Caribb. Is., 30: 101. Kaiser, Green, and Schmid, 1994, Canad. J. Zool., 72: 2217-2237, discussed the phylogenetic relationships of this species. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) auriculatus section, Eleutherodactylus martinicensis series, unassigned to species group, according to Hedges, 1989, in Woods (ed.), Biogeograph. W. Indies: 327. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus martinicensis group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 220. R.I. Crombie in Frost, 1985, Amph. Species World: 271, noted the introduction into Panama. Lever, 2003, Naturalized Rept. Amph. World: 189, discussed the introduced population in Panama. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) martinicensis species series, Eleutherodactylus antillensis species group, Eleutherodactylus antillensis species subgroup of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 57.
