Type locality: "Loma del Espejo, Alturas de Pizarras del Sur, Sabanas Llanas, km 41 Carretera de Luis Lazo, 130 m a.s.l., Pinar del Río (about 8 km W sumidero)", Cuba.

Known from the pine forests of Alturas de Pizarras del Sur, from the Viñales region in the east to the surroundings of Guane in the west, in the hills of Alturas de Pizaras del Sur Pinar del Río Province, western Cuba, 130-170 m elevation.

In the Eleutherodactylus (Euhyas) planirostris species series, Eleutherodactylus gundlachi species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 79-80. Rodríguez, Vences, and García, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 222-226, reported on the molecular phylogenetics of the species, placing it as the sister species of Eleutherodactylus pezopetrus, in the Eleutherodactylus pezopetrus group of the Eleutherodactylus planirostris series.
