Comment

Member of the ranine tribe Ranixalini, according to Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 66 (subsequently treated as a subfamily, Ranixalinae, by Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 335). Revised and reviewed by Clarke, 1983, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 79: 377-398, who considered the genus to have some affinity with Nannobatrachus, Nyctibatrachus, and Ceratobatrachus. See comment under Ranidae. Placed in Dicroglossinae, tribe Dicroglossini by Dubois, Ohler, and Biju, 2001, Alytes, 19: 55, without addressing the status of Ranixalini. On the basis of molecular data, Grosjean, Vences, and Dubois, 2004, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 81: 171-181, suggested that Nannophrys is in a cluster of genera including Euphlyctis + Hoplobatrachus and Sphaerotheca + Fejervarya (although they did not address the taxa suggested by Clarke, 1983, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 79: 377-398). Wiens, Sukumaran, Pyron, and Brown, 2009, Evolution, 63: 1217-1231, suggested that Nannophrys is the sister taxon of Euphlyctis + Hoplobatrachus. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences confirmed the monophyly of this taxon and its position as the sister taxon of Euphlyctis + Hoplobatrachus.
