Comment

Even though most of the species formerly included in this genus, except for most of the former Phyllobates bicolor group, have been transferred to other genera, the most comprehensive account of this genus is that by Silverstone, 1976, Sci. Bull. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 27: 1-53. See Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 128, for a discussion of the generic description; CWM disagrees with Dubois' interpretation. Widmer, Lötters, and Jungfer, 2000, Naturwissenschaften, 87: 559-562, provided a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the species. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences, confirmed the earlier result that Phyllobates is the sister taxon of the remaining dendrobatines.
