Telmatobufo Schmidt, 1952, Fieldiana, Zool., 34: 11. Type species: Telmatobufo bullocki Schmidt, 1952, by original designation.
False Toads (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 85).
Southern Chile.
Lynch, 1971, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 53: 113, placed Telmatobufo in his tribe Telmatobiini (along with Caudiverbera, Telmatobius, and Batrachophrynus), but Telmatobufo was transferred (along with Caudiverbera) into Calyptocephallelinae by Lynch, 1978, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 72: 1-57. See comment under Calyptocephalellidae. Nuņez and Formas, 2000, Amphibia-Reptilia, 21: 351-356, discussed phylogenetic relationships of the species and considered Caudiverbera to be the nearest relative of Telmatobufo. Formas, Nuņez, and Brieva, 2001, Rev. Chilena Hist. Nat., 74: 365-387, discussed the phylogenetics of the species in this taxon on the basis of osteology, DNA sequences, and karyology, and suggested that Telmatobufo venustus is the sister taxon of the other two species. Formas and Espinoza, 1975, Herpetologica, 31: 429-432, suggested karylogical evidence for a close relationship of Telmatobufo and Caudiverbera. Cuevas, 2010, Gayana, 74: 102-112, mapped the ranges of the species.
