Evol., 21: 294-308, suggested on the basis of mtDNA evidence that this taxon is the sister of Metacrinia + Arenophryne + Myobatrachus, a conclusion concurred with by Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297, and Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583 (although this latter publication did not address Arenophryne).. Donnellan, Mahony, and Bertozzi, 2012, Zootaxa, 3476: 69-85, reported on the molecular phylogenetics of the genus.
