Impact on shorebirds, ducks and other bird species.
Preliminary analyses of the
daily bird lists kept at La Pérouse Bay since 1969 indicate that
numbers of several bird species have declined in recent years,
particularly at severely degraded sites. Yellow rails are now
conspicuously absent and numbers of Stilt sandpipers, dowitchers,
godwits, northern shovelers and American wigeon have declined
substantially. Those lists and ones available from other sites
along the Hudson Bay coast are being fully analyzed. In addition,
we have begun regular inventories along transects at our
intensive study sites. This project is the work of Diana Pollak (pollakd@ix.netcom.com).
We have also begun a detailed study of the foraging behavior, diet preference and habitat use of the various shorebird species using the La Pérouse Bay region for both staging and nesting. This project is the work of Curt Vacek (r5ai@sdsumus.sdstate.edu).
