The SWRS Student Support Fund

This fund offers graduate students in biological sciences the opportunity to further their studies in field research at the Southwestern Research Station.  Your support makes this program possible.  If you are interested in supporting the research of a young scientist, you can make a donation to the SWRS Student Support Fund.  Your contributions are important – they help young scientists in the beginning years of their research.  To download a donation form, click on the link below.

The SWRS Special Fund

Donations to the Special Fund go to the improvement and maintenance of the Station's infrastructure.  The SWRS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005.  Many of the older structures are in need of renovation.  Your donations to this fund support the following projects:

Remodeling Older Units -- Our goal is to make the older housing units more energy efficient.  We have begun replacing windows with energy efficient double-paned windows and insulating outer walls.

Greening the Station -- In "greening" the Station, we strive to serve as a role model for visitors and the local community.  We started passive composting in 2004 and added solar lighting to footpaths.  We are currently remodeling all labs using sustainable materials.  We plan to increase our use of solar energy to reduce our dependence on the grid.  In spring 2007, we built a Constructed Wetland to clean our waste water.  Water that filters through this system is recycled for irrigation.

New Birding Area -- With your donations, we have increased the size of our birding area for visitors.  We added a small pond with a spray mist for the hummingbirds and some natural gardens.
