Classes and Workshops University classes may use Station facilities for courses in field ecology, entomology, geology, mammalogy, etc. High school classes and continuing education classes may also avail themselves of the Station’s facilities.
The Station makes an ideal location for a faculty/staff retreat or workshop. Conservation organizations, university departments, and other groups have enjoyed the location in the past. Contact the Station at swrs@amnh.org to make arrangements for your group.
Tour Group Accommodations Tour groups (participants of official organizations) are welcome to stay at the Southwestern Research Station. Space is usually available only during the spring and fall. Tour participants may share rooms with four or five per room, or be housed as couples, space permitting and if so booked. An initial deposit of $100 is due within seven working days to reserve tour space (this is refundable with a minimum of 30 days notice); deposits of $40/person are due three months in advance of your stay. Tour organizers must coordinate reservations and room assignments, and handle payment. All participants must be housed at the Station.
Please let us know in advance if you will need trail lunches during your stay, and if any participants are vegetarians. If your participants need coffee before breakfast, you may arrange this in advance - the tour leader or a member of your group will be responsible for turning on the coffeepot as the dining room is not open until breakfast. Coffee break refreshments can be arranged (for a charge). Refrigerators are available for storing cold drinks, etc. Smoking is prohibited in the main house lounge, the dining room, and in housing units.
Your participants should be aware that telephone service to the Station is limited to two public telephones, 520-558-2265; 558-2269. Guests may make outgoing calls from these lines and prearrange a time to receive incoming calls. Guests cannot be reached through the main Station number, 520-558-2396, except in real emergencies.
In order to welcome and briefly introduce the Station to your participants we ask that you arrive at least an hour before your first meal (e.g., 5:00 pm for supper at 6:00 pm). We are happy to give an introductory talk to the group about the Southwestern Research Station and the natural history of the Chiricahua Mountains, if you so desire.
Tour groups that will be using National Forest areas (e.g., South Fork, Rustler Park) for activities are advised that they may be required by law to obtain an Outfitter/Guide Permit. Please write to Recreation and Lands Staff, Douglas Ranger District, Coronado National Forest, 3081 N. Leslie Canyon Rd., Douglas AZ 85607, or call 520-364-3468. South Fork and other areas have a USFS parking fee.
USE OF CONFERENCE ROOM BY NON-INCOME-GENERATING GROUPS
Seasonal rates include use of the Conference Room if requested and available; in winter, the Conference Room can be reserved for $150.00/day.
