Fox Coulie, Alberta Aug. 28th 1910 My dear Professor Osborn: We are camped at last for about a week about forty miles above Fox Coulie when we are working out a small quarry from which we have taken four good hind limbs and lots of caudal vertebrae and some jaw material of Albertosaurus besides several bones of Ornithomimus and another small animal. The Albertosaurus is not all in position but I think the limbs will be fairly complete. Bones are all in hard sandstone but slip quite freely. Have also taken up a front leg of Trachodon or rather an ancestral genus. This is beyond doubt an earlier formation than Laramie and very rich in fossils. Have parts of two other skeletons in soft sand farther down the river but have not developed them yet. We found this rich place last week and it soon became necessary to have the wagon and outfit so I took the little row boat and rowed down the river. Soon located the wagon on the second day by a letter Davenport had placed in a split willow near shore. We loaded the small boat on the wagon and drove back up the River on the prairie wads; found a trail when we could get down and now have the wagon loaded on the flat boat sung and shipshape. Everything has worked out as I planned and we are assured a fine collection from what I have seen already and the best part is that it is new material. The fauna is different faunistic conditions prevailed during deposition Carnivorous dinosaurs and Trachodons were abundant while the horned dinosaurs were very scarce. Have seen only on Ceratopsian skull but doubt if it can be preserved. I hope you can come up and join us for the rest of your vacation. We get mail only once a week out here from Didsbury. You would have to take the stage at Didsbury forty miles north of Calgary and go to Carbon. From there a livery team could take you to the Tolman ferry and I will keep Tolman advised of our probable location. You see I cannot get the wagon out of the canyon except in one or two places below here and once down the flatboat cannot go up stream again or I could send Davenport for you. Let me know as soon as possible if you can come and when. I enclose check for $175 the balance of the loan for which I am very grateful. I trust you are having a fine vacation. Ever sincerely yours Barnum Brown |
