My dear Brown:
I was particularly pleased to receive your letter No. 6 from camp on Hell Creek; and to learn of your discovery of the skull, which I trust is the first of the series, since your letter leads me to believe that you have struck what Marsh used to call the Holy Ground. I am glad the party are working so well together.
I have just been informed by Dr. Matthew that they are moving to the south. Matthew and Granger to the Bridger Geological Survey work, Thomson and Loomis to the Colorado work.
I have sent out to you the post office maps of the region you are working in; also a package of four or five books which will give you the best infromation on the geology of the country. I have directed Mr. Hermann to send the supplies you ask for, and have notified Director Bumpus that you will soon need more money.
I trust you will do some prospecting so as to get a good knowledge of the run of the country; and if you are striking it rich we will not say very much about it, becase if we do we shalll probably havce some companions next year. I notice that our friends in other Museums don not hesitate to poach on our preserves.
I have just received a fine letter from Matthew. The expedition has been a very successful one, especially in finding some new and small mammals, beside a Rhinoceros and a fine collection of Merycocnoerus.
Just leaving for a months vacation. Always with best wishes to Professor Lull,

Sincerely yours,
[Osborn]

Mr. Barnum Brown
