Field assistants needed to help with a long term study of reproductive success in Common and Roseate Terns on Great Gull
Island, New York. On the spot training by project staff.
Food and shelter provided. You will be living in army buildings that were once officers' quarters. Students take turns with cooking, dishwashing, and other minimal maintenance tasks for keeping the kitchen and work areas livable. Click here for more details on work schedules throughout the season.
TO ALL STUDENTS WHO HAVE EVER WORKED ON GREAT GULL ISLAND
Each year for the last three over 10,000 pairs of Common Terns have nested on Great Gull Island. In 1999 on the peak day of hatching about 1100 nests hatched at each end of the island. During the last two years we have not been able to trap many adults because we could not fund enough students to help with the trapping.
In the year 2000 we are planning to have more students and to trap the eastern end of the island and in 2001 trap the west end. If any of you could come back and help during peak it would be great. We will probably have boats June 15, 18, 21 during the peak hatch so if you could come for three days it would be wonderful!
Think about it and let me know- even if you can't come email me or write me what you are doing. It would be great to hear from you. Email: hays@amnh.org
Cheers!
Helen
