Xyphinus baehrae       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 32243). Total length 1.48. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace orange-brown, without any pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica strongly reticulate, sides strongly reticulate, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, rebordered, with sharply pointed denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present, scattered; non-marginal pars thoracica setae light, needle-like; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin slightly rebordered, sinuous in front view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, light, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, with one enlaregd seta between PME, directed anteriorly, ALE largest, ALE circular, PME oval, PLE circular; posterior eye row recurved from both above and front; ALE separated by less than their radius, ALE-PLE separated by less than ALE radius, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum longer than wide, pale orange, uniform, fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures not touching, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, anterior margin slightly sclerotized; setae abundant, light, needle-like, densest laterally, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae slightly divergent, anterior face unmodified, promargin with small granules; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae light, needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified. Labium rectangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, posterior margin sclerotized; with 1 or 2 setae on anterior margin. Endites distally not excavated, anteromedian tip with backwards folded ridge, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions white, without color pattern. Book lung covers large, elliptical, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Pedicel tube medium, ribbed, scuto-pedicel region with paired curved scutal ridges, scutum extending far dorsal of pedicel, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, scutal ridge barely visible. Dorsal scutum strongly sclerotized, orange-brown, without color pattern, covering full length of abdomen, no soft tissue visible from above, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface reticulate, sides reticulate, anterior half without projecting denticles. Epigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, not protruding, small lateral sclerites absent, with two slightly longer setae in front of anterior spiracles, directed medially. Postepigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, long, semicircular, covering about 3/4 of abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Spinneret scutum with fringe of needle-like setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Interscutal membrane with setae. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, metatarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs, tarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore large, circular, situated at level of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments pale orange; embolus embolus not discernible; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella medially; patella about as long as femur, not enlarged, with small granules prolaterally; tibia trichobothria with 3 trichobothria; cymbium pale orange, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, with 2 stout setae on prolateral margin, stout setae on promargin dark and thick, two extra setae more ventrally, elongated; bulb pale orange, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, spherical, distal part with several dark apophyses and membranous outgrowths.

            Female (PBI_OON 32243). Total length 1.69. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Eyes ALE separated by their radius to diameter. Sternum anterior margin slightly sclerotized; setae evenly scattered. Mouthparts: Chelicerae promargin with only few small granules. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp spines absent; femur with two spine-like hairs ventrally; trichobothria tibia with three trichobothria. ABDOMEN: Pedicel scutal ridge barely visible. Dorsal scutum middle surface finely reticulate, sides finely reticulate. Epigastric scutum strongly protruding. Postepigastric scutum not fused to epigastric scutum. LEGS: metatarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs, tarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope. GENITALIA: Shape: very similar to X. YK009. Epigastric furrow very narrow. Small, sclerotized, half-moon-shaped structure visible in the furrow, surrounded by a rebordered half circle and lined with numerous needle-like hairs. There is a sclerotized plate visible dorsal of the half-moon-shaped structure. Epigastric scutum with two long, dark setae, directed medially..
