Xyphinus karschi       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 32219). Total length 1.82. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace orange-brown, without any pattern, ovoid in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to between 0.5 and 0.75 times its maximum width, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica finely reticulate, sides finely reticulate, thorax without depressions, fovea present, without radiating rows of pits, fovea barely visible; lateral margin straight, rebordered, with sharply pointed denticles; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present in u-shaped row, with two slightly longer setae on elevated portion; non-marginal pars thoracica setae light, needle-like; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin slightly rebordered, sinuous in front view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, light, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, with elongated seta between PME directed forwards, ALE largest, ALE circular, PME oval, PLE circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by their radius to diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum wider than long, yellow, uniform, fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures not touching, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles present, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, slightly thicker hair-bases laterally; setae abundant, light, needle-like, densest laterally, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae slightly divergent, anterior face unmodified, promargin with small granules; without teeth on both promargin and retromargin; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed posteriorly, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae light, needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified. Labium rectangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, posterior margin slightly sclerotized; with 3-5 setae on anterior margin. Endites anteromedian tip with backwards folded ridge, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization, inner margin sclerotized. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions white, without color pattern. Book lung covers large, elliptical, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified, booklung covers almost rectangular. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Pedicel tube medium, ribbed, scuto-pedicel region with straight scutal ridge, scutum extending far dorsal of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, straight scutal ridge interrupted. Dorsal scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, without color pattern, covering full length of abdomen, no soft tissue visible from above, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface smooth, sides smooth, anterior half without projecting denticles. Epigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, not protruding, small lateral sclerites absent. Postepigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, long, almost rectangular, covering nearly full length of abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Spinneret scutum with fringe of long setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Interscutal membrane with setae. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, metatarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs, tarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore large, circular, situated in front of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments yellow; embolus not discernable; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, one to two times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella medially; patella about as long as femur, not enlarged; tibia trichobothria with 3 trichobothria; cymbium yellow, narrow in dorsal view, fused with bulb but with clearly defined seam between, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, without distal patch of setae, laterally outstanding, with several slightly longer setae distally; bulb yellow, 1 to 1.5 times as long as cymbium, stout, spherical, distal part with several, strongly sclerotized apophyses, membranous, ovoid outgrowth laterally.

            Female (PBI_OON 32219). Total length 1.84. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace fovea barely visible; non-marginal pars cephalica setae with two slightly longer setae on elevated portion. Eyes with elongated seta between PME directed forwards. Sternum longer than wide, slightly thicker hair-bases laterally. Mouthparts: Chelicerae promargin with small granules. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, femur with two spine-like hairs ventrally; trichobothria tibia with three trichobothria. ABDOMEN: Book lung covers booklung covers almost rectangular. Pedicel straight scutal ridge interrupted. Epigastric scutum strongly protruding. Postepigastric scutum not fused to epigastric scutum. LEGS: patella plus tibia I longer than carapace, metatarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs, tarsi leg III and IV with harpoon-like hairs. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope. GENITALIA: Shape: epigastric furrow very narrow. Small, sclerotized, half-moon-shaped structure visible in the furrow, surrounded by a rebordered half circle and lined with numerous needle-like hairs. Epigastric scutum with two long, dark setae, directed medially.
