Xyphinus acutus       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 31955). Total length 1.93. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace orange-brown, without any pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica domed in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea present, lower part of carapace finely granulate, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, rebordered, with blunt denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present, scattered; non-marginal pars thoracica setae absent; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin slightly rebordered, sinuous in front view, sloping forward in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent, with two pairs of short, strong setae; setae present, light, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, PME largest, ALE circular, PME oval, PLE circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, procurved from front; ALE separated by their radius to diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum as long as wide, pale orange, uniform, fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures not touching, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles present, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, anterior margin of sternum strongly sclerotized; setae abundant, light, needle-like, evenly scattered, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae widely divergent, anterior face unmodified, anterior surface covered with few granules; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed posteriorly, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae light, needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified. Labium elongated hexagon, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, much more heavily sclerotized than sternum; with 3-5 setae on anterior margin, subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites distally not excavated, anteromedian tip with backwards folded ridge, posteromedian part unmodified, much more heavily sclerotized than sternum, posteromedian part strongly sclerotized. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly, tip of Abdomen overlapping carapace, almost reaching highest point of carapace. Book lung covers large, elliptical, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Pedicel tube long, ribbed, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum extending far dorsal of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, few sharply pointed denticles with long hairs in scuto pedicel region anterior to the pedicel. Dorsal scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, without color pattern, covering full length of abdomen, no soft tissue visible from above, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface punctate, sides punctate, anterior half without projecting denticles, dorsal scutum embedding narrow tip of abdomen. Epigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, not protruding, small lateral sclerites absent. Postepigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, long, semicircular, covering nearly full length of abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Spinneret scutum with fringe of needle-like setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Interscutal membrane with setae. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, tibiae with one sligthly stronger and longer hair on the ventral apex, metatarsi spur on dorsal apex. Harpoon-like hairs covering the distal part of Metatarsi III and IV, tarsi harpoon-like hairs on tarsi III and IV. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore small, circular, situated at level of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments pale orange; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, with many granules on prolateral surface (stridulatory function?); tibia with many granules on prolateral surface (stridulatory function?); cymbium yellow, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb almost black, 1 to 1.5 times as long as cymbium, stout, spherical, proximal part of bulb light. Middle and distal part of bulb strongly sclerotized. Plate-like outgrowth prolaterally, elongated apophysis retrolaterally, slightly twisted at the tip.

            Female (PBI_OON 31955). Total length 2.08. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace pars cephalica slightly elevated in lateral view, sides finely reticulate. Clypeus margin unmodified, vertical in lateral view, with two pairs of short, strong setae. Sternum longer than wide, anterior margin of sternum slightly sclerotized. Mouthparts: Chelicerae slightly divergent. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified, posteromedian part slightly sclerotized. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, femora with two long and strong, spine-like hairs ventrally, tbibiae with few spine-like hairs prolaterally; trichobothria tibia with three trichobothria dorsally. ABDOMEN: tip of Abdomen overlapping carapace, almost reaching highest point of carapace. Pedicel few sharply pointed denticles with long hairs in scuto pedicel region anterior to the pedicel. Dorsal scutum dorsal scutum embedding narrow tip of abdomen. Epigastric scutum strongly protruding. Postepigastric scutum not fused to epigastric scutum, without posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. LEGS: tibiae with one sligthly stronger and longer hair on the ventral apex, metatarsi spur on dorsal apex. Harpoon-like hairs covering the distal part of Metatarsi III and IV, tarsi harpoon-like hairs on tarsi III and IV. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope. GENITALIA: Shape: epigastric furrow narrow. Posterior margin of epigastric scutum strongly rebordered. Two dark sclerites visible between this margin and the pedicel. Postepigastric scutum with sclerotized, tongue-like structure, elongated posteriorly, reaching the middle of the ventral scutum and having a pointed end. Underneath and above this strongly protruding structure is a dark plate visible..
