Xyphinus holgeri       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 16212). Total length 1.55. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace orange-brown, without any pattern, ovoid in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners with slightly sclerotized triangular projections, posterolateral surface with few tiny spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, denticles on carapace margin in some specimens more pronounced, two small spikes on the elevated portion of pars cephalica, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, rebordered, with sharply pointed denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present, scattered; non-marginal pars thoracica setae light, needle-like; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin slightly rebordered, sinuous in front view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, light, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, ALE largest, ALE oval, PME oval, PLE circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by their radius to diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME touching. Sternum longer than wide, orange-brown, uniform, fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures not touching, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles present, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump; setae abundant, light, needle-like, evenly scattered, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium orange-brown. Chelicerae slightly divergent, anterior face with swelling, promargin with small granules; promargin with three or more teeth; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae light, needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region abruptly narrowed. Labium rectangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, posterior margin of labium sclerotized; with 3-5 setae on anterior margin, subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites distally not excavated, anteromedian tip with backwards folded ridge, posteromedian part unmodified, much more heavily sclerotized than sternum, posteromedian part strongly sclerotized. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly. Book lung covers large, elliptical, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Pedicel tube medium, ribbed, scuto-pedicel region with straight scutal ridge, scutum extending far dorsal of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, scuto-pedicel region with few pustules; needle-like hairs originating from these pustules. Dorsal scutum strongly sclerotized, orange-brown, without color pattern, covering full length of abdomen, no soft tissue visible from above, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface smooth, sides smooth, anterior half with projecting denticles, projecting denticles on anterior half very tiny. Epigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, not protruding, small lateral sclerites absent. Postepigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, orange-brown, long, almost rectangular, covering about 3/4 of abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Spinneret scutum with fringe of needle-like setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: pale orange, without color pattern; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, patella plus tibia I shorter than carapace, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore large, circular, situated at level of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments pale orange; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, one to two times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella medially; patella about as long as femur, not enlarged, with many very small granules on prolateral surface (stridulatory function?); tibia with many very small granules on prolateral surface (stridulatory function?), trichobothria with 3 trichobothria; cymbium pale orange, ovoid in dorsal view, fused with bulb but with clearly defined seam between, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb orange-brown, 1 to 1.5 times as long as cymbium, stout, spherical, bulb ending as oval plate with several dark, sclerotized apophyses, with one roundish, membraneous outgrowths and one plate-like membraeous outgrowth ventrally.

            Female (PBI_OON 16212). Total length 1.72. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace denticles on carapace margin in some specimens more pronounced, two small, sharply pointed denticles on the elevated portion of pars cephalica, with few small, sharply pointed denticles on the posterior part. Eyes posterior eye row straight from above, procurved from front. Mouthparts: Chelicerae anterior face unmodified. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, femora with two strong spine-like hairs ventrally. Tibiae with few longer and stronger spine-like hairs prolaterally; trichobothria tibiae with three trichobothria. ABDOMEN: Pedicel scuto-pedicel region with few pustules; needle-like hairs originating from these pustules. Dorsal scutum projecting denticles on anterior half very tiny. Epigastric scutum strongly protruding. Postepigastric scutum not fused to epigastric scutum. LEGS: patella plus tibia I longer than carapace, tibiae with one slightly stronger and longer hair on the ventral apex, metatarsi harpoon-like hairs covering the distal part of Metatarsi III and IV. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope. GENITALIA: Shape: epigastric furrow very narrow. Dark, knoblike structure visible posteriorly of the furrow. This slightly sclerotized, rather short structure is surrounded by a half circle and lined with numerous needle-like hairs. Epigastric scutum with two long, dark setae, directed medially..
