Ischnothyreus arcus       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 25959). Total length 1.48. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace pale orange, with dark brown egg-shaped patches behind eyes, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides strongly reticulate, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present, scattered; non-marginal pars thoracica setae light, needle-like; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin unmodified, straight in front view, vertical in lateral view, low, ALE separated from edge of carapace by less than their radius, median projection absent; setae present, light, needle-like. Eyes six, well developed, ALE largest, ALE circular, PME oval, PLE oval; posterior eye row straight from above, procurved from front; ALE touching, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME touching. Sternum as long as wide, pale orange, uniform, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, furrow smooth, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles present, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump; setae sparse, light, needle-like, evenly scattered, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; promargin with three or more teeth; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, with prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae light, needle-like, densest medially; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified, promargin unmodified, inner margin unmodified. Labium elongated hexagon, not fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization; subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites anteromedian tip with one strong, tooth-like projection, posteromedian part unmodified, much more heavily sclerotized than sternum. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions white, without color pattern. Book lung covers anterolateral edge unmodified. Posterior spiracles not connected by groove. Pedicel tube short, unmodified, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum extending far dorsal of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent. Dorsal scutum weakly sclerotized, pale orange, without color pattern, covering more than 3/4 of abdomen, more than 1/2 to most of abdomen width, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface smooth, sides smooth, anterior half without projecting denticles. Epigastric scutum weakly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, not protruding, small lateral sclerites absent, very pale yellow, barely visible. Postepigastric scutum weakly sclerotized, yellow, covering about 1/3 of the abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, without posteriorly directed lateral apodemes, barely visible. Spinneret scutum specimen bleached, not visible. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Spinneret scutum without fringe of setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Interscutal membrane with setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, patella plus tibia I shorter than carapace. Leg spination (only surfaces bearing spines listed, all spines longer than segment width): femora: I p0-1-1; II p0-1-0; tibiae: I, II p2-2-0; v2-2-0; metatarsi: I, II p1-1-0; v1-1-0; (leg I: spines very long, max length 2.75Ám, leg II: spines very long, max length 2.25Ám. ). Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore large, triangular with rounded angles, situated at level of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without setae. Palp normal size, strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments dark red-brown; embolus dark, embolic part of palpal bulb stout with three distinct processes or lobes seen in dorsal view. Two smaller sub-distal processes rounded and slightly hook shaped, and one distal process where sperm duct terminates; trochanter normal size, with ventral projection; femur normal size, shorter than trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, without prolateral row of ridges, setae unmodified; tibia trichobothria with 3 trichobothria; cymbium dark red-brown, ovoid in dorsal view, fused with bulb but with clearly defined seam between, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb dark red-brown, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, tapering apically, distal part short, thin sperm duct visible beneath chitin starting posterior to obtusely bent tip. Duct appears to end at darkly coloured region on ventral surface of distal tip below small rounded transparent structure..

            Female (PBI_OON 25751). Total length 1.85. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace without any pattern. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow. fangs without prominent basal process; setae evenly scattered. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp spines absent; tarsus unmodified. ABDOMEN: Book lung covers large, ovoid, without setae. Pedicel scutum not extending far dorsal of pedicel. Dorsal scutum covering 1/2 to 3/4 of abdomen, between 1/4 and 1/2 abdomen width. Postepigastric scutum pale orange, widely hexagonal, only around epigastric furrow, not fused to epigastric scutum, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring. Spinneret scutum with fringe of needle-like setae. LEGS: Leg spination (only surfaces bearing spines listed, all spines longer than segment width): femora: I p0-1-1; II p0-1-0; tibiae: I, II p2-2-0; v2-2-0; metatarsi: I, II p1-1-0; v1-1-0; (leg I: spines very long, max length 3.42Ám, leg II: spines very long, max length 2.85Ám. ). Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope. GENITALIA: Shape: sclerotised plate almost square in shape.. Ventral view: a thick, darkly coloured convoluted tube visible through cuticle, originating posterior to middle of epigastic furrow and extending to a heavily sclerotised hump-shaped process in base anterior to round opening of genitalia. Posteriorly directed apodemes present which are also joined to the genital opening with heavily scerotised internal structures..
