Molotra molotra       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 1990). Total length 2.05. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace orange-brown, without any pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica slightly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica granulate, sides granulate, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, carapace lateral margin only slightly undulate, with about 14 denticles on each side., without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin undulate, rebordered, with blunt denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present in u-shaped row; non-marginal pars thoracica setae light, needle-like; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin unmodified, straight in front view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, light, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, all subequal, ALE oval, PME squared, PLE oval; posterior eye row recurved from above, procurved from front; ALE separated by their radius to diameter, ALE-PLE separated by less than ALE radius, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum longer than wide, orange-brown, uniform, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, with radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, furrow with rows of small pits, radial furrow opposite coxae III present, surface smooth, covered with small round pits, microsculpture medially and in furrows, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin with continuous transverse groove, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, infracoxal grooves are present, but shallow and without apparent pores.; setae abundant, light, needle-like, densest laterally, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium orange-brown. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; without teeth on both promargin and retromargin; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae dark, needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified, promargin with row of flattened setae, inner margin with medial denticles, laminate groove absent. Labium rectangular, not fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, labium shape trapezoidal.; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites distally excavated, serrula present in single row, anteromedian tip unmodified, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions pale orange, without color pattern. Book lung covers small, ovoid, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Pedicel tube medium, ribbed, scuto-pedicel region with small denticles in curved rows anteriorly from booklung, scutum not extending far dorsal of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent. Dorsal scutum strongly sclerotized, orange-brown, without color pattern, covering full length of abdomen, no soft tissue visible from above, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface smooth, sides smooth, anterior half without projecting denticles. Epigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, slightly protuding, small lateral sclerites absent. Postepigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, orange-brown, long, almost rectangular, covering nearly full length of abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Spinneret scutum without fringe of setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Interscutal membrane with setae. Colulus represented only by setae. Spinnerets: ALS: aLS has 4 spigots, the median with a large base and 3 laterals with small bases.; PMS: pMS has 2 spigots with large bases.; PLS: pLS has 3 spigots with large bases.. LEGS: pale orange, without color pattern; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, tibia I unmodified, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent. Leg spination (only surfaces bearing spines listed, all spines longer than segment width): tibiae: I, II v4-2-2; metatarsi: I, II v2-2-0. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsal proclaws and retroclaws inner face striate; tarsus I superior claws with zero teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, zero teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, six teeth on median surface of retroclaw; tarsus II superior claws with zero teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, zero teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, six teeth on median surface of retroclaw; tarsus III superior claws with zero teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, five teeth on median surface of proclaw, zero teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw; tarsus IV superior claws with zero teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, zero teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, six teeth on median surface of retroclaw. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one; base longitudinally narrowed, aperture internal texture grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges. Tarsal organ with 2 sensilla visible, tarsal organs with 2 sensilla on palp and tarsi III and IV; 3 sensiall on tarsi I and II.. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore small, oval, situated at level of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments pale orange; embolus dark, prolateral excavation absent; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, enlarged, without prolateral row of ridges, setae unmodified; tibia trichobothria with 3 trichobothria; cymbium pale orange, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, with distal patch of setae; bulb pale orange, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, elongated.

            Female (PBI_OON 1990). Total length 2.20. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace dark red-brown, carapace lateral margin only slightly undulate, with about 16 denticles on each side.. Sternum anterior sternal groove smaller than in male. Infracoxal grooves are present, but shallow and without apparent pores.. Labium labium shape trapezoidal.. Endites distally not excavated. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, patella without prolateral row of ridges. ABDOMEN: Pedicel tube short, scuto-pedicel region with paired curved scutal ridges. Epigastric scutum without lateral joints. Postepigastric scutum not fused to epigastric scutum. Spinneret scutum present, complete ring. Supra-anal scutum absent. Spinnerets: ALS: aLS as in male, a median spigot on a lare base and 3 laterals on small bases.; PMS: pMS with 4 spigots, the anterior one large.; PLS: pMS with 8-9 spigots, all with large bases; median spigot slightly larger than the others.. LEGS: Leg spination (only surfaces bearing spines listed, all spines longer than segment width): tibiae: I, II v4-2-2; metatarsi: I, II v2-2-0. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsus I superior claws with six teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw; tarsus II superior claws with six teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw; tarsus III superior claws with four teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, four teeth on median surface of proclaw, four teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw; tarsus IV superior claws with four teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, four teeth on median surface of proclaw, four teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, four teeth on median surface of retroclaw. Trichobothria examined with SEM. Tarsal organ tarsal organs with 2 sensilla on palp and tarsi III and IV; 3 sensiall on tarsi I and II..
