Ischnothyreus flippi       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 12343). Total length 1.49. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace orange-brown, with dark brown egg-shaped patches behind eyes, ovoid in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica strongly reticulate, sides strongly reticulate, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, reticulation of the surface covering almost whole carapace. Only the most upper part of the carapace is smooth. Patches behind eyes barely visible, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, rebordered, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae light, needle-like, present, scattered; non-marginal pars thoracica setae light, needle-like; marginal setae light, needle-like. Clypeus margin strongly rebordered, straight in front view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, light, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, ALE largest, ALE circular, PME oval, PLE oval; posterior eye row straight from above, procurved from front; ALE separated by less than their radius, ALE-PLE separated by less than ALE radius, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum longer than wide, pale orange, uniform, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, with radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, furrow smooth, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, extensions of pre-coxal triangles present, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, distance between coxae II and III equals distance between coxae III and IV, greater than distance between coxae I and II, radial furrows barely visible; setae abundant, light, needle-like, evenly scattered, originating from surface, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified, process at base of fangs small; retromargin with three or more teeth; fangs directed medially, shape normal, with prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae light, needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified. Labium rectangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, laterally extended into slightly darker knobs; with 3-5 setae on anterior margin, subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites anteromedian tip with one strong, tooth-like projection, posteromedian part unmodified, much more heavily sclerotized than sternum, tooth-like projection hook-like. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions white. Book lung covers large, ovoid, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Pedicel tube short, ribbed, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum not extending far dorsal of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, booklung covers much darker than scutum. Dorsal scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, covering full length of abdomen, no soft tissue visible from above, not fused to epigastric scutum, middle surface striated, sides striated, anterior half without projecting denticles, anterior part and posterior part much darker. Epigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, surrounding pedicel, not protruding, small lateral sclerites absent, anterior margin of sperm pore with a fringe of needle-like setae. Postepigastric scutum strongly sclerotized, pale orange, short, almost rectangular, covering about 3/4 of abdominal length, fused to epigastric scutum, anterior margin unmodified, without posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum absent. Supra-anal scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, light, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, light, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, light, needle-like. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Interscutal membrane with setae. Colulus absent. LEGS: pale orange; femur IV not thickened, same size as femora I-III, patella plus tibia I shorter than carapace, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, tibiae basal half of tibiae IV darkened. Leg spination (only surfaces bearing spines listed, all spines longer than segment width): femora: I p0-1-1; r0-0-1; II p0-0-1; tibiae: I, II p2-1-1; v2-1-1; metatarsi: I, II p1-1-0; v1-1-0. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore large, circular, situated at level of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions. Palp normal size, strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments brown; embolus light, not discernible; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, one to two times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella about as long as femur, not enlarged; tibia trichobothria with 3 trichobothria; cymbium brown, fused with bulb but with clearly defined seam between, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb; bulb brown, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, tapering apically, middle part with ventral protuberance, distal part with spoon-like apophysis, dorsally ribbed, with membranous outgrowths.

            Female (PBI_OON 12343). Total length 1.70. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace pale orange, without any pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica finely reticulate, sides finely reticulate, reticulation of the surface covering almost whole carapace. Only the most upper part of the carapace is smooth.; lateral margin smooth. Clypeus margin unmodified, low, ALE separated from edge of carapace by less than their radius. Eyes posterior eye row procurved from above. Sternum without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, distance between coxae II and III greater than distance between coxae I and II, and coxae III and IV. Mouthparts: fangs directed posteriorly. Labium with 1 or 2 setae on anterior margin. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp claws absent; spines present, formula: femur v1-1-1; tarsus unmodified, tarsus with 5 strong spine-like hairs ventrally; trichobothria tibia with 3 trichobothria. ABDOMEN: dorsum soft portions pale orange, without color pattern. Posterior spiracles not connected by groove. Pedicel unmodified. Dorsal scutum weakly sclerotized, without color pattern, covering less than 1/2 of abdomen, between 1/4 and 1/2 abdomen width, middle surface smooth, sides smooth. Epigastric scutum weakly sclerotized, slightly protuding. Postepigastric scutum weakly sclerotized, widely hexagonal, only around epigastric furrow, not fused to epigastric scutum, with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes. Spinneret scutum present, incomplete ring, spinneret scutum very thin, almost not visible. Epigastric area few slightly longer and thicker hairs between pedicel and epigastric scutum. Spinneret scutum with fringe of needle-like setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets present. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: without color pattern; patella plus tibia I longer than carapace. Leg spination (only surfaces bearing spines listed, all spines longer than segment width): femora: I p0-1-2; r0-0-1; II p0-0-1; tibiae: I, II p2-1-1; v2-1-1; metatarsi: I, II p1-1-0; v1-1-0; (leg I: the third prolateral spine on the femora are much smaller. ). Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with Compound microscope. GENITALIA: Shape: the posterior margin of the epigastric scutum is lined with numerous needle-like setae. The margin of the postepigastric scutum is slightly thickened. In its middle is a dark needle-like, y-shaped structure visible. Underneath is a dark winding tube shining through.
