Orchestina cornuta       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON_0008987). CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace yellow, with net-shaped pattern, ovoid in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to between 0.5 and 0.75 times its maximum width, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, carapace surface covered with small platelets in SEM view, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus margin unmodified, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME touching, PME largest, all eyes circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum as long as wide, yellow, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin with semicircular depression in the middle half, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, sternum with pattern of tiny sepia spots forming central longitudinal band and vague intercoxal triangles along margin; setae abundant, needle-like, evenly scattered, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae needle-like, evenly scattered, with group of three strong, converging setae on distal part of each chelicera; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified, laminate groove absent. Labium triangular, fused to sternum, same as sternum in sclerotization, anterior margin with short and wide extension; its anterior concave margin provided with three setae in raised sockets, lateral ones with blunt teeth (BT); anterior part provided with group of four needle like setae, central area with two pairs of flattened, leaves-shaped setae and with a single small flattened setae at the middle. Endites distally not excavated, serrula absent, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization, medially depressed and ridged along margin; anteromedian with one strong, tooth-like projection pointing forward; anterior face with one small outgrowth. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions pale white, with gray netlike pattern. Book lung covers small, round, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified, with dented texture. Pedicel tube short, unmodified, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum absent, but abdomen not extending anterior of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent, with meshed texture visible in SEM view; covered dorsally by a carapace sclerotized triangular extension pointing backward. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like, epigastric area protruding, provided anteriorly with needle-like setae and centrally with group of short setae. Postepigastric area setae present, needle-like. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, patella plus tibia I longer than carapace, tibia I unmodified, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb present, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, metatarsi apical part provided with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II and III;, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in smaller teeth. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsal proclaws and retroclaws inner face smooth; tarsus I superior claws with seven teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, seven teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with Stereo microscope; tibia: I three, II three, III three, IV one; metatarsus: each with one; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges, located potseriorly on metatrs I, II and III and at 3/5 of length of metatars IV. Tarsal organ pear shaped, margin raised above surroundings; with four sensilla visible on tars I and II and three sensilla visible on tars III and IV; situated posteriorly in front of setae on tars I, II and III and isolated at half of length of tars IV. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore small, narrow, slit-like, situated in front of anterior spiracles, unmodified; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments yellow; embolus dark, prolateral excavation absent, of medium length, tube-shaped, at angle of about 135° with bulb, flattened and widened at extremity, with outer margin raised and folded inward; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella basally, with ventral depression near base; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, without prolateral row of ridges, setae unmodified, attachment to tibia sub-basal; tibia tibia ovoid in lateral view, more than twice as wide as femur, trichobothria not examined; cymbium yellow, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae, rounded, tarsal organ in transverse, slightly oblique axis; with raise margin and knob-like excrescence in vicinity of narrowed part; bulb white, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, tapering apically, piriform, as wide as tibia.

            Female (PBI_OON_0033868). As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace carapace surface covered with small platelets in SEM view; non-marginal pars cephalica setae absent from lateral side. Eyes aLE-PME touching. Sternum anterior margin unmodified, sternum with pattern of tiny sepia spots forming central longitudinal band and vague intercoxal triangles along margin. Labium anterior margin indented at middle. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, patella without prolateral row of ridges. ABDOMEN: Book lung covers with dented texture. Pedicel with meshed texture visible in SEM view; covered dorsally by a carapace sclerotized triangular extension pointing backward. LEGS: metatarsi apical part provided with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II and III;, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in smaller teeth. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria not examined. GENITALIA: Shape: anterior part with strongly sclerotized anvil-shaped structure, posterior part with narrow transverse band slightly recurved in centre; both parts connected by two longitudinal, parallel, opaque, tubular structures;. Dorsal view: anvil-shaped structure surrounded by narrow hoop interrupted anteriorly, with widened ends.
