Orchestina fractipes       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON_0033884). CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace yellow-brown, with net-shaped pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus margin unmodified, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME touching, PME largest, ALE circular, PME oval, PLE circular; posterior eye row straight from above, recurved from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME touching. Sternum as long as wide, yellow-brown, not fused to carapace, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin with semicircular depression in the middle half, posterior margin not extending posteriorly of coxae IV, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, with tiny dark sepia spots forming thin dark stripes radiating from anterior half of sternum; setae abundant, needle-like, evenly scattered, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; without teeth on both promargin and retromargin; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae needle-like, evenly scattered, sparse; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified, promargin unmodified, inner margin unmodified, laminate groove absent. Labium triangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, anterior face striated; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, subdistal region with group of five needle like setae, with one pair of large symmetric flattened setae in the centre, followed by one pair of large asymmetric flattened setae, in a slightly oblique longitudinal position. Endites distally not excavated, serrula present in single row, anteromedian tip unmodified, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization, inner margin with submarginal row of short pectinate setae, adjacent to row of strong needle-like setae. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions yellow-brown, with dark posterior end. Book lung covers small, elliptical, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Pedicel tube short, unmodified, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum absent, but abdomen extending anteriad of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent, covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, needle-like. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, patella plus tibia I longer than carapace, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, tibiae tibia I slightly sinuous in lateral view, halfway twisted outward; with multiple pores on dorsal and prolateral face in proximal half, metatarsi with apical part with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in smaller teeth. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges, located distally on metatarsi I, II and III and at 3/5 of length of metatarsus IV. Tarsal organ pear shaped, margin raised above surroundings; with four sensilla visible on tarsi I and II and three sensilla visible on tarsi III and IV; situated distally in front of setae on tarsi I, II and III, isolated at half length on tarsus IV. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore not visible; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments yellow; embolus dark, prolateral excavation absent, long, needle-like, at almost right angle with long axis of bulbus; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, without prolateral row of ridges, setae unmodified, attached to tibia sub-basally; tibia reniform, more than two times as wide as femora, trichobothria not examined; cymbium pale orange, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae, spherical in dorsal view,, tarsal organ elongate piriform, transverse to axis of segment, with three sensilla; with short needle like seta emerging from tubercle near proximal margin; bulb yellow, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, piriform.

            Female (PBI_OON_0033886). As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace non-marginal pars cephalica setae absent from lateral side. Clypeus sloping forward in lateral view. Eyes aLE-PME touching. Sternum pale orange, anterior margin unmodified, with tiny dark sepia spots forming thin dark stripes radiating from anterior half of sternum. Mouthparts: setae sparse. Labium subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, patella without prolateral row of ridges. ABDOMEN: Pedicel covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: tibiae tibia I slightly sinuous in lateral view, halfway twisted outward; in proximal half with multiple pores on dorsal and prolateral face, metatarsi apical part with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of legs I, II, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in smaller teeth. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria not examined. GENITALIA: Shape: large, sclerotized tubular structure visible in transparency. Ventral view: with slightly conical, loaf shaped, tubular structure, followed by large, procurved, transparent band.
