Orchestina gibbotibialis       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON_0033846). CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace brown, with net-shaped pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, surface covered with small platelets in SEM view, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus margin unmodified, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME: touching, PME largest, all eyes circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum as long as wide, yellow-brown, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin with semicircular depression in the middle half, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, sternum covered with tiny dark sepia spots, forming dark stripes radiating from anterior half of sternum; anterior part strongly bulging;; setae abundant, needle-like, evenly scattered, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified, fang straight; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae dark, needle-like; paturon distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified. Labium triangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, with tiny sepia spots delimiting two oval, adjacent areas in porsterior part; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, subdistal region provided anteriorly with group of five needle like setae, medilally with one pair of thin symmetric flattened setae in the centre, followed by one pair of thin asymmetric flattened setae, positioned in a slightly oblique longitudinal row. Endites serrula absent, anteromedian tip unmodified, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization. ABDOMEN: globular, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions pale white, with gray netlike pattern. Book lung covers large, ovoid, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Pedicel tube short, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum absent, but abdomen not extending anterior of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent, covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, needle-like. Spinneret scutum without fringe of setae. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, tibiae proximal part with strong prolateral outgrowth provided with group of setae. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: I three; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore not visible; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments pale orange; embolus dark, slender, tube-shaped, as long as bulbus, at almost right angle with long axis of bulbus; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, setae unmodified, attached to tibia sub-basally; tibia two to three times as wide as femur, dorsal side domed; cymbium pale orange, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb pale orange, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, tapering apically.

            Female (PBI_OON_0033843). As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace non-marginal pars cephalica setae absent from lateral side. Clypeus sloping forward in lateral view. Eyes aLE-PME: touching. Sternum orange-brown, with tiny dark sepia spots, forming dark stripes radiating from anterior half of sternum. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium orange-brown. setae light, evenly scattered. Labium color pattern with tiny sepia spots delimiting two adjacent oval areas in posterior part; subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites serrula present in single row. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, patella without prolateral row of ridges. ABDOMEN: Pedicel unmodified. LEGS: tibia I unmodified. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria not examined. GENITALIA: Shape: with straight, tubular structure visible in transparency;. Ventral view: strongly sclerotized and darker in front; in lateral view clearly folded back over almost half its length..
