Orchestina clavigera       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 33552). CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace brown, with net-shaped pattern, broadly oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica slightly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to between 0.5 and 0.75 times its maximum width, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, surface covered with small platelets in SEM view, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus margin unmodified, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent, vertical, slightly concave in lateral view; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME touching, PME largest, all eyes circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum as long as wide, yellow-brown, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, surface smooth, without pits, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension, anterior corner unmodified, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, with tiny dark spots along margin forming a large darker band, anterior margin slightly concave with transverse depression at base of labium; setae abundant, needle-like, evenly scattered, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae slightly divergent, anterior face unmodified; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae needle-like, evenly scattered; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified. Labium triangular, fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, posterior part with tiny sepia spots delimiting two adjacent, oval areas; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, subdistal region provided anteriorly with group of five needle like setae, medially with one pair of thin, symmetric, flattened setae in centre, followed posteriorly by one pair of thin asymmetric flattened setae, in a slightly oblique longitudinal row. Endites serrula absent, anteromedian tip unmodified, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization. ABDOMEN: globular, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions pale white, without color pattern. Book lung covers without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Pedicel tube short, unmodified, scutum absent, but abdomen not extending anterior of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent, with meshed texture visible in SEM view; covered dorsally by a carapace sclerotized triangular extension pointing backward. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Supra-anal scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae absent. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, tibia I Emeritís glands absent, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, tibiae proximal part of tibia I strongly swollen with dorsal part slightly depressed and provided with oblique, longitudinal row of pores, visible with SEM. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsal proclaws and retroclaws inner face smooth; tarsus I superior claws with eight teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, eight teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, six teeth on median surface of retroclaw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges, hood incomplete, interrupted in front by plate at level of aperture margin. Tarsal organ tarsal organ I pear shaped, with four sensilla: one pair of swollen, rounded sensilla and one pair of tiny, slender sensilla. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore not visible; furrow without omega-shaped insertions, without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments white; embolus dark, prolateral excavation absent, slender, needle shaped, as long as bulbus, turned inward, forming almost a right angle with bulbus axis; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, setae unmodified, attached to tibia sub-basally; tibia almost cylindrical, slightly more than two times as wide as femur; cymbium yellow-brown, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb white, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, tapering apically.

            Female (PBI_OON 33850). As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace non-marginal pars cephalica setae dark. Clypeus sloping forward in lateral view. Eyes aLE-PME touching. Sternum radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, microsculpture absent, margin with tiny dark spots forming a large darker band. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow-brown. Chelicerae straight. Labium posterior part with tiny sepia spots delimiting two adjacent, oval areas; subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites serrula present in single row. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified. ABDOMEN: dorsum soft portions with dark posterior end. LEGS: white; tibia I unmodified. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria not examined. GENITALIA: Shape: with straight, tube shaped structure, visible in transparency; in ventral view strongly sclerotized and darker in front; in lateral view clearly folded back over almost half its length; anterior quarter medially provided with small, faintly sclerotized transverse band.
