Orchestina fannesi       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 8975). CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace yellow, with net-shaped pattern, elongate oval in dorsal view, pars cephalica slightly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, carapace surface covered with small platelets in SEM view, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus margin unmodified, sloping forward in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME touching, PME largest, all eyes circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum as long as wide, yellowish white, uniform, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, microsculpture absent, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin unmodified, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, extensions of pre-coxal triangles absent, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump; setae sparse, needle-like, evenly scattered, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae needle-like, evenly scattered, sparse; paturon distal region unmodified, inner margin unmodified. Labium fused to sternum, anterior margin indented at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization, rounded, lateral margin strongly sclerotized, anteriorly with two small spines emerging from tubular projection; with 3-5 setae on anterior margin, subdistal portion with unmodified setae, with median setae near anterior margin and near posterior margin, four central setae delimiting a rectangle. Endites serrula present in single row, anteromedian tip with one strong, tooth-like projection, posteromedian part unmodified, with strongly sclerotized tip, pointing forward; anterior part bifid, one prong with sclerotized tip, other one with spatulate setae;. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions yellow-brown, with gray netlike pattern, darker posteriorly, with median chevron. Book lung covers small, round, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Pedicel tube short, unmodified, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum absent, but abdomen extending anteriad of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent, covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Supra-anal scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, needle-like. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, metatarsi apical part of legs I, II and III with prolateral group of small modified setae. Leg spines absent. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: II three, III three; metatarsus: II one, III one; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges, incomplete, interrupted in front by plate at level of aperture margin; located potseriorly on II and III. Tarsal organ narrow diamond shaped, margin raised above surroundings. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore not visible; furrow without setae. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments yellow; embolus dark, tapering apically; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, setae unmodified; tibia one to two times as wide as femur; cymbium yellow, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb yellow, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, spherical.

            Female (PBI_OON 8912). As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace carapace surface covered with small platelets in SEM view; pattern with median sepia band flanked by two lateral bands, extending backwards from ocular area, joining at top of carapace in foveal area; non-marginal pars cephalica setae absent from lateral side. Eyes aLE-PME touching. Sternum yellow. Mouthparts: setae sparse. Labium rounded, lateral margin strongly sclerotized at base. Endites anterior part mesally with spatulate setae;. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified. ABDOMEN: dorsum soft portions with dark posterior end, with anterior median sepia band. Pedicel covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. LEGS: Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth not examined in detail. Trichobothria not examined. GENITALIA: Shape: genital area with dark central region visible in transparency, two small sclerotized holes in front of epigastric fold with strongly sclerotized lips. Dorsal view: t shaped tubular stucture, with median part darker, anterior transversal part (anterior uterine sclerite) nearly transparent, posterior region with median semicircular sclerotized form,with two lateral projections.
