Orchestina lanceolata       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 8981). Total length 1.02. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace yellow, ovoid in dorsal view, pars cephalica slightly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, color pattern darker anteriorly, with dark central longitudinal stripe, split in three at level of fovea and radiating backward; central stripe again split in two at posterior tip, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, characterized by alternating less and more strongly sclerotized areas: lateral margin with sclerotized area between frontal margin and ALE and centre with rectangular sclerotized area between margin and PME; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME touching, PME largest, all eyes circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum longer than wide, yellow, darker anteriorly than posteriorly, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, surface smooth, without pits, sickle-shaped structures absent, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, medially provided with a shallow rounded bulge; anterior part strongly sclerotized attached to labium by narrow projection thus forming two pouches accommodating tip of embolus; setae densest anteriorly and laterally, needle-like; anterior lateral margins sinuous, forming three shallow ridges, provided with long setae and separated from coxae II and III by two frontal depressions; anterior ridge just behind anterior pouches, provided with procurved slit on either side of posterior slope.. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae slightly divergent, retromagin of paturon with low proximal swelling; fang distally curved; fangs directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae needle-like, evenly scattered, sparse; paturon distal region unmodified, posterior surface unmodified. Labium much more heavily sclerotized than sternum, spade-shaped; lateral margins strongly sclerotized and with sclerotized transverse band in centre; anterior margin with two small sclerotized tooth-like projections; posterior part narrowed, fused to sternum; with 3-5 setae on anterior margin, subdistal portion with unmodified setae, provided anteriorly with three subdistal setae, medially with two pairs of setae and posteriorly with one seta. Labrum covered anteriorly with plumose setae. Endites serrula present in single row, posteromedian part unmodified, much more heavily sclerotized than sternum, distal end clearly divided in two parts: lateral part with strongly sclerotised lateral margin, its distal extremity with sharp tip pointing backward; median part curved, with spatulate setae. ABDOMEN: globular, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly; dorsum soft portions yellow, with dark posterior end, dorsal chevron pattern faint. Book lung covers small, round, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified, finely squamose. Pedicel tube short, with fringe of setae, scutum absent, but abdomen extending anteriad of pedicel, plumose hairs absent, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, cuticular outgrowths near pedicel absent, covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Supra-anal scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, needle-like. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: yellow, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, tibia I unmodified, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, metatarsi apical part provided with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II and III;, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in smaller teeth curved downward. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsal proclaws and retroclaws inner face smooth; tarsus I superior claws with nine or more teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, nine or more teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw; tarsus II superior claws with nine or more teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, nine or more teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges, incomplete, interrupted in front by plate at level of aperture margin; located distally on metatarsi I, II and III and at 3/5 of segment length on metatarsus IV. Tarsal organ narrow, diamond shaped, margin raised above surroundings; with four sensilla visible on tarsi I and II and three sensilla visible on tarsi III and IV; ; situated distally in front of setae on tarsi I, II and III, isolated in middle of segment on tarsus IV. GENITALIA: Epigastric region with sperm pore not visible; furrow without omega-shaped insertions. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical; embolus dark, with two subdistal lobes at right angles, one dorsal, rounded, one retrolateral, slightly further to extremity, triangular; extremity with two sharp points; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, without posteriorly rounded lateral dilation, attaching to patella basally; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, with prolateral row of ridges, setae unmodified; tibia one or two time as wide as femur; cymbium yellow, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, plumose setae absent, without stout setae, without distal patch of setae; bulb yellow, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, stout, spherical, prolateral surface with knob-like outgrowth halfway between cymbium and embolus base.

            Female (PBI_OON 8982). Total length 1.28. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace with dark central longitudinal stripe, split in three at level of fovea and radiating backward; central stripe again split in two at posterior tip; non-marginal pars cephalica setae absent from lateral side. Clypeus margin unmodified, sloping forward in lateral view. Eyes aLE-PME touching. Sternum anterior margin with semicircular depression in the middle half, anterior lateral margins slightly sinuous, forming shallow depressions in front of coxae II and III; centre finely granulate; margins with row of tiny dark spots; setae abundant, needle-like, evenly scattered. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; paturon inner margin with scattered setae. Labium anterior margin indented at middle, rounded; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin. Labrum covered anteriorly with plumose setae. Endites anteromedian tip unmodified, anterior inner margin with row of spatulate setae. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified, patella without prolateral row of ridges, dorsal side of tarsus in middle with small, flattened, knob-like outgrowth; tarsus ending in sharp conical point; tarsal organ very narrow, forming an oblique slit in relation to the axis of the tarsus; margin raised above surroundings. ABDOMEN: ovoid; dorsum soft portions dorsal chevron pattern faint. Book lung covers covered by dense pattern of undulating ridges. Pedicel with meshed texture visible in SEM view; covered dorsally by a carapace sclerotized triangular extension pointing backward. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: metatarsi apical part provided with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II and III;, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in three smaller teeth curved downward. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsus I superior claws with eight teeth on median surface of proclaw, eight teeth on median surface of retroclaw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; located potseriorly on metatrs I, II and III and at 3/5 of length of metatars IV. Tarsal organ narrow diamond shaped, margin raised above surroundings; with four sensilla visible on tarsi I and II and three sensilla visible on tarsi III and IV; situated distally in front of setae on tarsi I, II and III and isolated in middle of segment on tarsus IV. GENITALIA: Shape: in transparency dark longitudinal median band, in anterior half flanked by oval opening on either side, ending in dark triangular structure at epigastric, divided in two short oblique stretches ending in circular dark spots.
