Orchestina gigabulbus       Get publication



            Male (PBI_OON 9010). Total length 1.33. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace yellow-brown, with net-shaped pattern, ovoid in dorsal view, pars cephalica strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with rounded posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge without pits, posterior margin not bulging below posterior rim, anterolateral corners without extension or projections, posterolateral surface without spikes, surface of elevated portion of pars cephalica smooth, sides smooth, thorax without depressions, fovea absent, carapace surface covered with small platelets in SEM view, without radiating rows of pits; lateral margin straight, smooth, without denticles; plumose setae near posterior margin of pars thoracica absent; non-marginal pars cephalica setae needle-like, present, scattered, absent from lateral side; non-marginal pars thoracica setae needle-like; marginal setae absent. Clypeus margin unmodified, sloping forward in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more, median projection absent; setae present, needle-like. Chilum absent. Eyes six, well developed, aLE-PME touching, PME largest, all eyes circular; posterior eye row recurved from above, straight from front; ALE separated by more than their diameter, ALE-PLE touching, PME touching throughout most of their length, PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius. Sternum as long as wide, yellow-brown, not fused to carapace, median concavity absent, without radial furrows between coxae I-II, II-III, III-IV, radial furrow opposite coxae III absent, surface smooth, without pits, sickle-shaped structures absent, anterior margin with semicircular depression in the middle half, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension, anterior corner unmodified, lateral margin without infra-coxal grooves, distance between coxae approximately equal, lateral margins unmodified, without posterior hump, with finely granulate small subdistal area in centre, clearly visible with SEM; color pattern with median band suffused with dark pigment; setae abundant, needle-like, evenly scattered, without hair tufts. Mouthparts: Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow-brown. Chelicerae straight, anterior face unmodified; fangs without tooth-like projections, directed medially, shape normal, without prominent basal process, tip unmodified; setae needle-like, evenly scattered, group of three strong, converging setae on distal part of each paturon; paturon inner margin with scattered setae, distal region unmodified. Labium triangular, fused to sternum, diamond shaped, with lateral margin more heavily sclerotized than sternum, anterior margin with two small tooth like outgrowths, separataed by three setae; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, subdistal region provided anteriorly with two pairs of needle like setae, central region with two pairs of wide, flattened, symmetric leave shaped setae and with one small flattened seta in the middle. Endites serrula absent, posteromedian part unmodified, same as sternum in sclerotization, distal part slightly swollen, distally with curved ventral groove, delimiting short curved projection; inner margin with dense row of flattened, sinuous, strongly tapered setae. ABDOMEN: ovoid, without long posterior extension, rounded posteriorly, inter-scutal membrane rows of small sclerotized platelets absent posteriorly, ventral side with conical projection splited by a large transeversal opening corresponding to the spem pore and provided with rows of setae on anterior part; dorsum soft portions yellow-brown, with gray netlike pattern, dorsal chevron and pale lateral band poorly developed. Book lung covers small, round, without setae, anterolateral edge unmodified. Pedicel tube short, unmodified, scuto-pedicel region unmodified, scutum absent, but abdomen not extending anterior of pedicel, matted setae on anterior ventral abdomen in pedicel area absent, covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Dorsal scutum absent. Epigastric scutum absent. Postepigastric scutum absent. Spinneret scutum absent. Supra-anal scutum absent. Dorsum setae present, needle-like. Epigastric area setae uniform, needle-like. Postepigastric area setae present, needle-like. Dense patch of setae anterior to spinnerets absent. Colulus represented only by setae. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: yellow-brown, without color pattern; femur IV thickened, much larger than femora I-III, patella plus tibia I longer than carapace, tibia I unmodified, tibia IV specialized hairs on ventral apex absent, tibia IV ventral scopula absent, metatarsi I and II meso-apical comb absent, metatarsi III and IV weak ventral scopula absent, metatarsi apical part provided with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II and III;, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in three smaller teeth. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsal proclaws and retroclaws inner face smooth; tarsus I superior claws with six teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, six teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, six teeth on median surface of retroclaw; tarsus II superior claws with six teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw; tarsus IV superior claws with six teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, six teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, six teeth on median surface of retroclaw. Tarsi I to IV without inferior claw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; tibia: each with three; metatarsus: each with one; base rounded, aperture internal texture not grate-like, hood covered by numerous low, closely spaced ridges, located distally on metatarsi I, II and III and at 3/5 of length on metatarsus IV. Tarsal organ pear shaped, margin raised above surroundings; with four sensilla visible on tarsi I and II and three sensilla visible on tarsi III and IV; situated posteriorly in front of setae on tarsi I, II and III and isolated at half of length of tarsus IV. GENITALIA: Epigastric furrow without omega-shaped insertions. Palp normal size, not strongly sclerotized, right and left palps symmetrical, proximal segments yellow-brown; embolus dark, distal section resembling elephant trunk in prolateral view, due to sharp, dorso-distal extension; trochanter normal size, unmodified; femur normal size, two or more times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella basally, ventrally and proximally depressed; patella shorter than femur, not enlarged, setae unmodified, attached to tibia sub-basally; tibia two to almost four times as wide as femur; cymbium yellow-brown, ovoid in dorsal view, not fused with bulb, not extending beyond distal tip of bulb, without stout setae, axis diagonal in relation to bulbus, tarsal organ oval, orientation transverse in relation to axis of cymbium; with three sensillae and small knob-like projection on retrolateral side; bulb yellow-brown, more than 2 times as long as cymbium, tapering apically, stout, as wide as palpal tibia.

            Female (PBI_OON 0000897). Total length 1.69. As in male except as noted. CEPHALOTHORAX: Carapace elongate oval in dorsal view, carapace surface covered with small platelets in SEM view; non-marginal pars cephalica setae absent from lateral side. Eyes aLE-PME touching. Sternum longer than wide, with finely granulate small subdistal area in centre, clearly visible with SEM; central band and between coxae suffused with dark pigment; furrow between coxae I-II poorly developed and smooth. Labium anterior margin indented at middle, with lateral margin more heavily sclerotized than sternum; subdistal portion with unmodified setae. Endites serrula present in single row, anteromedian tip unmodified. Female palp claws absent; spines absent; tarsus unmodified; tarsal organ piriform, with three sensilla visible. ABDOMEN: dorsum soft portions dorsal chevron and pale median band poorly developed. Pedicel covered dorsally by sclerotized, triangular carapace extension, pointing backward; meshed texture visible in SEM view;. Spinnerets: ALS: two-segmented, with one major ampullate gland spigot and three piriform gland spigots, the anterior one clearly separated from the posterior ones;; PMS: with one minor ampullate gland spigot;; PLS: with two aciniform gland spigots. LEGS: patella plus tibia I near as long as carapace, metatarsi apical part provided with group of small modified setae on prolateral side of leg I, II and III;, tarsi bearing claws with proximal tooth divided itself in three smaller teeth. Leg spines absent. Tarsi I to IV superior claws tooth examined in detail; tarsus II superior claws with eight teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, eight teeth on median surface of proclaw, eight teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw, eight teeth on median surface of retroclaw; tarsus III superior claws with six teeth on lateral surface of proclaw, six teeth on median surface of proclaw, six teeth on lateral surface of retroclaw. Trichobothria examined with SEM; located distally on metatarsi I, II and III and at 3/5 of length on metatarsus IV. Tarsal organ pear shaped, margin raised above surroundings; with four sensilla visible on tarsi I and II and three sensilla visible on tarsi III and IV; situated distally in front of setae on tarsi I, II and III and isolated in middle of segment on tarsus IV. GENITALIA: Shape: central dark, tube shaped area, with slightly widened caudal part, apparently opening in epigastric fold, anterior part with two, knob-like lateral projections.
