The collections of the Department of Mammalogy are open to bona
fide researchers and students. Applications to visit the collection
should be made at least two weeks in advance via email to mammvisits@amnh.org
or in writing to the Curator-in-Charge and should include a brief
description of activities to be conducted in the collection, taxa
to be examined, and proposed dates for the visit.
Remember
that permission to visit the Department of Mammalogy does not automatically
grant access to other departments such as Vertebrate Paleontology.
Each department to be visited requires separate approval.
Every
person visiting the department needs separate approval. In other
words, if you're planning to bring an assistant with you, you must
make this clear in your application and receive approval for each
individual.
Applications
from students must be accompanied by a letter of support from their
academic advisors. The letter of support should include a brief
description of the student's project and what s/he will examine
during the visit. Further, it should include a statement about the
student's prior experience working with museum specimens. Students
visiting jointly (e.g., with an "assistant") must submit separate
applications and letters of recommendation from their advisor(s).
In
order to make the application process simpler, first-time visitors
are encouraged to use the application
form, which can be downloaded here. After completing the form,
save it to your computer and then e-mail it to mammvisits@amnh.org.
Established visitors are welcome to use the form if they wish, but
are not required to do so.
Note that making molds of specimens is considered potentially destructive
so visitors wishing to make molds must submit a destructive
sampling request.
Approved
visitors may work in the collections Monday through Friday, between
8:00 am and 4:30 pm. The collections are not open to visitors outside
these hours.
