Specimens
or samples shall meet the following general conditions:
- Specimens are accepted at the discretion of the AMNH curatorial staff.
- Donated
specimens shall become the property of the AMNH and shall remain in the
collections as long as they retain their physical and genetic integrity
and their relevance to the mission of the Museum. Disposition of specimens shall be at the discretion of AMNH.
- A signed
copy of the AMNH Registrar's Specimen
Transfer Form must accompany all donations.
- Specimens
must be collected or salvaged by legal means and copies of all pertinent permits
shall accompany the donation. No specimens will be accepted without
documentation that they were collected legally.
- All
specimens must be accompanied by data describing where, when, and
by whom they were collected.
- If desired,
donors may place a 5-year restriction on the use of specimens. During
this time, s/he has the right to restrict electronic and physical
access to the samples. Intent to restrict access must be indicated
on the Specimen Transfer Form. Otherwise, access and use of the samples
will be at the discretion of the Department of Mammalogy's curatorial
board, who will make them available to qualified researchers for scientific
research. A report of physical use of samples may be requested by the donor but such reports will be generated only when requested.
