RESEARCH INTERESTS

Life-long interest in mollusks, particularly land snails and especially the terrestrial mollusks of Sicily, an under-studied group, on an under-studied island.

EDUCATION

BSA in Biological Sciences, University of Georgia, 1991. Concentration in Zoology, with coursework in herpetology, marine biology, biodiversity, and pre-veterinary studies.

PRESENT POSITION

Scientific Assistant, Malacology, American Museum of Natural History, 2004 to present.

Duties include collection management (of dry, alcohol-preserved, type, and photographic transparency collections), database management, website design and maintenance, registrarial work, participation in public educational programs (i.e., annual Identification Day), and assisting curator/supervisor (Dr. Paula Mikkelsen) with research needs (including collections duties, website design, scientific illustration, scanning electron microscopy, histology).

Zoology

Certificate of Laboratory Fitness

Biological Technician II, Fish & Wildlife Associates, Chattanooga, Tennessee, 1992. Contract work for Tennessee Valley Authority, Aquatic Biology Laboratory, Zebra Mussel Monitoring Project. Collected field samples and did micoscope checks for presence of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) veligers in Tennessee rivers and lakes. Also worked on monitoring project for Asiatic clams (Corbicula fluminea).

Internship in Herpetology Department, Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia; 1991. Assisted keepers with maintenance of exhibits, preparation of diets, and care of animals in education and reptile departments.

Volunteer at various nature centers, 1990-1993.

Veterinary Assistant, Shallowford Animal Hospital, Marietta, Georgia, 1987-1988. Prepared laboratory tests, assisted in surgery; also responsible for care and medication of animals.

Art

Freelance Illustrator and Artist; 1992 to present. Biological illustration in several techniques, original drawings and paintings, commissioned works.

Exhibitions, from 1995 to present. Most recent entitled Mollusca, featured oil paintings of mollusks.

Lived in Italy (Florence and Sicily), 1999-2003. Persued oil painting, etching, and continued illustration work.
