Scott
Schaefer's Fieldwork in Venezuela - SAS89
The 1989 Academy of
Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and Museo de Biología,
Universidade Central de Venezuela expedition was the
first of two expeditions to Venezuela funded by grants to
Scott Schaefer from the Eppley Foundation for Research.
The Personnel consisted of S. Schafer and W. Saul of the
ANSP and F. Provenzano, O. Castillo, and technicians from
MBUCV in Caracas. Construction of a new road during the
previous year between San Fernando de Apure and Puerto
Ayacucho provided an opportunity to survey fishes of a
large geographic area encompassing the western
tributaries of the Orinoco River south of the Río Apure
(Ríos Capanaparo, Cinaruco, La Pica, etc.). Many of these
are blackwater rivers, differing greatly from the
whitewaters of the Apure/Meta that dominate the llanos to
the north, and consequently harbor a different, rather
uncharacteristic fish fauna.
