Scott Schaefer's Fieldwork in Brazil - SAS95

The 1995 Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP) and Museo de Ciencias (MCP), Pontificia Universidad Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre expedition was the second of two expeditions to Brazil funded by a grant to Scott Schaefer from the National Science Foundation in support of monographic research on Otocinclus. The personnel consisted of S. Schaefer and W. Saul of ANSP, J. Garavello from UFSCar, and R. Reis and students from PUCRS. The purpose of this expedition, in addition to assembling a comprehensive collection of fishes, was to survey the Atlantic coastal streams north of Rio de Janeiro for additional populations of Otocinclus. Species of Otocinclus were known from the lower Paraná and Atlantic coastal streams of Santa Catarina State and areas to the south, but no collections or reports indicated the presence of Otocinclus in areas of eastern Brazil north of Rio de Janeiro (Thayer Expedition specimens were collected in the vicinity of Rio in the 1860's; however, no recent collections had obtained additional Otocinclus specimens from that region). This expedition failed to locate populations in the area, which strengthened the case for the absence of Otocinclus from this region.
