brazil93
The 1993 Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP) and Museo de Ciencias (MCP), Pontificia Universidad Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre expedition was the first of two expeditions to Brazil funded by a grant to Scott Schaefer from the National Science Foundation in support of monographic research on Otocinclus. The personnel consisted of S. Schaefer and W. Saul of ANSP, J. Garavello from UFSCar, and R. Reis and students from PUCRS. Survey of the collections at the Museo de Zoological, Universidade de São Paulo revealed the existence of an undescribed species of Otocinclus in the Rio São Francisco of eastern Brazil. The purpose of this expedition was to locate populations of this (and search for additional) undescribed Otocinclus species and to obtain a comprehensive collection of São Francisco fishes for ANSP, MCP, and MZUSP. Large series of the new Otocinclus (O. xakriaba Schaefer, 1987) were obtained from several localities in the vicinity of Januaria, an area previously collected by J.D. Haseman.
