Fieldwork by AMNH Ichthyologists

Most of the recent collecting by the curators has been old and new world freshwater fishes. This has involved collections in Bolivia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Gabon, Madagascar, Peru, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Additionally, other AMNH ichthyologists have recently made substantial freshwater collections throughout much of Africa (e.g., Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Tanganyika). Recent NSF funding will allow extensive Congolese collections to be made (see Congo Project).

Curator John Sparks and his post-docs have begun making marine collections, beginning with work in Madgascar, and now expanding to the Caribbean and the Indo-Pacfic. Additionally, other AMNH ichthyologists have recently made substantial marine collections throughout the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

The curators all maintain active field programs and encourage and include their post-docs and students in their fieldwork. Please see the
Research and Publications pages for more information and the links to the right for more detailed information about several of the recent Departmental expeditions.
