Research Fellowships

Research Fellowships provide support to recent postdoctoral investigators and established scientists to carry out a specific project within a limited time period. The project must fit into the areas of vertebrate zoology, invertebrate zoology, paleozoology, anthropology, astrophysics, and earth and planetary sciences. The program is designed to advance the training of the participant by having her/him pursue a project in association with museum professionals in a museum setting.

Appointment as a Research Fellow can be up to two years. At the time of appointment, the Museum names the fellowship after the major source of funding. Candidates are expected to be in residence at the Museum or one of its field stations. Limited relocation, research, and publication support is often available.

A major purpose of the Research Fellowship Program is to promote the mutual scholarly interest and interaction of fellows and Museum staff members. Research Fellows are judged primarily on:

  1. their research abilities and experience, and
  2. the merits and scope of the proposed research.

Application Procedures Interested researchers should obtain a Research Fellowship application online or from the Office of Grants and Fellowships, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th St., New York, NY 10024. The application requires a project description with bibliography, budget, curriculum vitae including list of publications, and letters of recommendation.

Applications are reviewed by scholars in appropriate fields. Sponsoring departments evaluate the merits of the application, assess the availability of resources to fulfill the project's objectives, and determine the importance of the project in relation to the overall goals of the department and Museum.

The Museum's Committee on Grants and Fellowships makes the final recommendations for appointment. These recommendations are subject to favorable action by the Senate of the Scientific Staff, and the Board of Trustees.

Deadline Research Fellowship applications must be postmarked by November 15. At this time, applications are not accepted by fax or e-mail.
