Program

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) has begun a new initiative, the Annette Kade Graduate Student Fellowship Program. The purpose of this program is to partner with French and German institutions to permit an exchange of graduate students. This program will allow AMNH graduate students to spend 3 months during the year at a selected university in France or Germany and would also allow 2 French and German students to come here for 3 months. The German and French students who come to the AMNH to study will be assisted with housing arrangements, and each student will pursue a predetermined research project with a science mentor. This mentor will also ensure that the student is exposed to the other disciplines in the museum.

The AMNH will ensure that the French and German universities provide similar support and experiences for the U.S. based students. We expect that the students will have the opportunity to explore new cultures and enrich their lives with new contacts and friendships.

Research Opportunities

The types of research opportunities for French and German students at the Museum are numerous and varied and occur in the five divisions: Vertebrate Zoology (Herpetology, Icthyology, Mammalogy, Ornithology), Invertebrate Zoology (Entomology, Living Invertebrates), Paleontology (Vertebrate, Invertebrate) Physical Sciences (Earth and Planetary Sciences, Astrophysics) and Anthropology.

The Annette Kade Graduate Student Fellows will be selected from nominations from AMNH curators and scientists in France and Germany who collaborate with our staff. Since we wish to make sure that the students admitted are fully able to benefit from the program, and that it will not harm the normal progress of their graduate education, we require that the student’s advisor nominate the candidate student. Students cannot apply to the program directly. Students who wish to participate should discuss this with their advisors.

Stipend

The Graduate Student Fellows will be supported during their stay at the AMNH with a $2500/month stipend for housing and food for a 3-month stay. Travel will be provided in the form of roundtrip airfare not to exceed $1500 and modest supply money is available.

Nominations should be submitted by completing this form AND providing letters of support from both ends of the exchange.
