Terataner elegans Bernard
Type location Guinea (Bernard, 1952, illustrated, queen;
worker described by Bolton, 1981b: 292); worker and queen described
(see Bolton, 1995) .
Holotype queen collected at Kéoulenta, sample 2, savanna, by
Lamotte.
WORKER (drawn specimen from Nigeria) - TL 6.21 mm, HL 1.31, HW 1.24,
SL 0.78, PW 0.93 (in my guide as Terataner species T¹)
Colour orange-brown, darker posteriorly (one CRIN specimen was
generally lighter). Appearance dull due to an all over fine reticulate
sculpturation, overlaid by longitudinal rugae, most marked on the head
but finer posteriorly until they disappear on the posterior dorsum of
the first gastral tergite. Erect hairs short and sparse; pilosity on
the dorsal surfaces but extremely sparse and very short. Lateral
posterior corners of the head and anterior dorsal corners of the
pronotum with acute angles or minute denticles. Petiole teeth
pyramidal with a round apex in front view. Postpetiole in front view
is hemispherical, with a flat anterior face which has pronounced
vertical rugae.

Other records listed by Bolton (1981b) were almost all from Ghana
- at CRIG (B. Bolton; C.A.M. Campbell), Kunso (D.J. Cross),
Adeisio, Bunso and Sajimasi (D. Leston), and Aburi (P.M. Room).
In Nigeria, collected from shrub vegetation at CRIN (SC3
Block) and on cocoa at Ogbere (near Ibadan) and Ife, where it was
found in a debris tent on a cocoa flower. The last was the only
Nigerian record listed by Bolton (1981b).
