Soldier - return to key Minor - return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Angola (Santschi, 1925h: 160, illustrated, worker; Santschi, 1930b: 62, soldier); subspecies monardi (Santschi, 1930b: 65, illustrated, worker; stirps Santschi, 1937d: 219) and pellax (st. pellax, n.stirps,Santschi, 1930b: 63, illustrated, soldier & worker) both also from Angola; soldier and worker described (see Bolton, 1995) .

Santschi's (1925h) description is at {original description}. Santschi's (1930b) description, is at {original description}; with monardi and pellax at {original description} and {original description}. The reduction of monardi from species to "stirps" or subspecies by Santschi (1937d, he uses both in the same sentence) is accompanied by the note that monardi is a little bigger and the head more reticulate behind.

{Pheidole rohani pellax}The photomontage is of a minor specimen from Congo, Brazzaville, t 1.15; 19.viii.2007; 24 h pitfall trap; collected Yves Braet & Eric Nzassi. This appears to match the "variety" pellax and to differ quite significantly from the type, notably in being much smaller, which matches the Santschi statement of size.
