Primary systematics literature on ants, that is publications which include statements on the status of species such as the description, synonymization, change of status etc.) includes approximately 3,800 publications. They have been published in more than 800 journals by close to 400 authors.
We try to make all these publications digitally accessible. For that reason we begun to contact all the authors and publishers to ask for their permissions.
We would like you to contact us, if you agreed to have your publications online accessible, or if we haven't contacted you yet, and won't allow us to make them accessible.
The goal is to have 75% of the publications online and fully linked into the Name Server by 2004. This project is supported by a grant from the Atherton-Seidall Foundation at Smithsonian Instution to Ted Schultz and Donat Agosti.
The following scientists and publishers agreed to make their publications online accessible, have not replied yet (sci. / publ.), or declined (sci. / publ).
Dear Donat,
You have full permission to make all my ant publications online accessible.
With best regards.

Leider kenne
ich mich damit gar nicht aus. Weisst Du, wann etwas als online-Publikation gilt

einstellen? (OK von Senckenberg vorausgesetzt).

Dear Dr. Agosti
I'm sorry that I could not reply quickly because our network system had a
problem. I discussed with Prof. Yamane about the copy-right of our recent
publications. We think, it is quite possible to make the papers published from
the Japanese Society of Tropical Ecology ("Tropics" and "Tropics Monograph
Series") online-accessible after we will ask the present chief editor. But for
the other papers (published from the Entomological Society of Japan, the
Japanese Society of Systematic Entomology, etc.) you would very probably need
official negotiatations with them.

Yes, I agree in having all my papers scanned and put on the web. But probably
my will is nonsense as the copyright usually belongs to the Journals. I am sure
those two spanish journal would not mind in giving the permission to scan and
publish that information. If I can be of help in this let me know (I leave for a
ten-days holyday tomorrow; I'll be here again on 28 August).
The kind of work you are doing will push the studies of ants without doubt.
To have available bibliography on the net is to be highly prised. I have now a
splendid print of those old Forel's drawing of strange ants of Madagascar in my
desk. It is beginning to look even scientific...

From: Alexander Radchenko Dear Donat,
surely I would be glad to have my publications in Internet. So, please, you
can scan, etc. But only some problems. As you know, many of my earlies
publications (I think all from Zoologicheskyi Zhurnal and Entomologicheskoe
Obozrenie) have been translated to English and published in Entomol. Review
(Washington). But, first of all, I never seen most of them (I have only
publications about Myrmica). Second, nobody shown me english variand before
publication. And, third, as I see from Myrmica papers, there are too many
mistakes in these English variants! Not only very bad translation (I can see
this even with my quite bad English!), they used absolutely not myrmecological
tarminology, etc. Moreover, in the Key the lost some couplets, many mistakes in
drawings, etc., etc.
So, I think better check these English versions and correct all mistakes!
Surely, I must do this work. So, if you will have electronic versions of these
papers, could you send them me? Unfortunately, they are too big, but I'll give
you address of any my friends who have Internet and on-line e-mail system and
you can send files. But this is not for today!
What can you say?
Yes, you have my permission to reprint or electronically duplicate any of my publications. Carl Rettenmeyer

I discussed with Prof. soowon Cho about the copy-right of my recent publications. Maybe does you know Dr. soowon Cho?
Dr. Cho had studied both morphological and molecular systematics in America for his M.Sc., Ph.D., and postdoctorate. He majored in Lepidoptera.
I have absolutely no problem with you putting my papers which I have authored online - in fact I think it a very good idea.

As I recall, anything published after 1978(?) is copyrighted, even if not

Dear Dr. Agosti,
The Entomological Society of America (ESA) grants permission to Antbase.org and the Hymenoptera Name Server to make all those individual articles published by the ESA which deal with ant systematics to be online accessible as PDF documents, and at a later stage, as full text in XML. There is one condition to this permission, which is that only an article two years old or older than its publication date may be used.
Please ensure that the proper citation or credit is provided for each article.
Sincerely,
Alan Kahan

Dear Dr. Agosti,

Once published, you are welcome to make the paper available on antbase. The
authors and the editors will be pleased to have this paper published online. Since
2000 we are providing authors with electronic reprints (pdf) and will probably make
"Fauna of Arabia", which is a not for profit periodical, available online soon.
We will send you the pdf once it is available, I made a note in the file.
Once again many thanks and kind regards,

Von: Johan Billen [johan.billen@bio.kuleuven.ac.be]
Dear Daniela,
During the International Committee meeting of IUSSI at the Sapporo
congress, Dr. Donat Agosti (American Museum of Natural History)
communicated on the idea of making taxonomic information of ants widely
available on the web. This information for the greater part is contained in
scientific publications, so also in our own Insectes Sociaux. Making this
information widely available, however, will also have to do with copyright
issues. This idea got unanimous support from the IUSSI-delegates, for
practical arrangements on this issue, Dr. Agosti will be in touch with you
directly (agosti@amnh.org).
With best regards,

Sehr geehrter Herr Agosti
laengst faellige Antwort erinnern.
Adresse davon waere: http://www.birkhauser.ch/journals/4000/4000_tit.htm.

it's fine for you to go ahead, as long as you have the author's permission. The
theory being that its the author's responsibility to know the copyright issues
with their papers. So go ahead.

Journal of the New York Entomological Society
From: Dear Donat -
In my capacity as editor of the Journal of the New York Entomological
Society, I have no objection to your making our content regarding ants available
on your database via the web. Since the Journal is not copyrighted, it may, in
my opinion, be treated as open scientific literature. It is uncertain as to
whether authors of individual articles retain copyright to their particular
submissions, but as a matter of course we recommend contacting authors prior to
reproducing their material. From the standpoint of the Society, however, I have
no objection to your desire to further disseminate the Journal's information.
Sincerely,
- Dan Polhemus, Editor, Journal of the New York Entomological Society

Tropics Monograph Series; Japanese Society of Tropical Ecology
From: Katsuyuki Eguchi Dear Dr. Agosti
Happy new year 2002!
I got an official answer from the present chief editor about the copy-right
of the my publication on TROPICS Monograph Series. The Japanese Society of
Tropical Ecology has not so far taken the necessary procedures to have the
copy-right of articles on "TROPICS". So, each author(s) should have the
copy-right of his(their) article.
I would like to ask you to make my article on "TROPICS Monograph Series No.
2" accessible online.
With my best regards, Eguchi

credit is due I'm more comfortable keeping my distance.
Thanks, Steve

Invertebrate Zoology
From: CARLA.FLORES@CSIRO.AU
Dear Donat,
Thank you for your message.
Further to Camilla Myers' response to Brian Heterick (please see below), I
regret to advise that we cannot grant you the permission to make our journal
papers available online elsewhere for the same reason that Camilla has already
indicated. However, you are most welcome to include in SIweb only the Abstracts
of any relevant papers from the Invertebrate Systematics journal and set up a
link to our website: www.publish.csiro.au/journals/is. Interested parties can
then obtain access to the papers directly from the website, using the
pay-for-view system.
This permission to include in your website only the Abstracts is given
without charge but would appreciate full acknowledgement to the source material
and CSIRO as the original publisher of the information by including this credit
line:
Reproduced from Invertebrate Systematics (add Authors' names and Year of
publication here), with permission of CSIRO PUBLISHING

Journal of Natural History
From: "Richard Steele" fao Donat Agosti
Dear Donat Agosti:
Dr Polaszek has shared your enquiry.
Full text posting of articles from the Journal is not appropriate: the
journal is published in simultaneous online and print editions - see Journal of Natural
History - and has been since January 1999.
There is no question of waiving copyright as you suggest.
We would be happy to set up a reciprocal link between the two web sites -
visitors to our site can search titles and abstracts (free of charge), and
subscribers can access full text.
Thank you for your interest.

As to your usage of the Bolton revision, the AEI has no problems with the
citation of species lists or distributional data, but keys, descriptions,
illustrations, etc. may not be put on your website.
Best wishes,
David

The project sounds interesting. However will there be any fee payment
to the journals you will be referencing? This is a private enterprise journal
and we are not interested in giving away information except on a fee payment per
use basis.
