HETEROPTERAN COLLECTIONS
AND PRIMARY TYPES
IN THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

The collections of Heteroptera in the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) contain approximately 600,000 specimens, with representatives in all families except Hipsyterygidae, Paraphyrnoveliidae, and Stemmocryptidae.

Representation is worldwide with greatest strengths in the South America, the Caribbean, western North America, Africa, and New Guinea. The best represented higher groups are Enicocephalomorpha, Dipsocoromorpha, Pentatomoidea, Reduviidae, and Miridae.

Substantial portions of the important collections of Rauno Linnavuori, James A. Slater, and Pedro Wygodzinsky are deposited in the AMNH.

Nearly 1400 primary types of Heteroptera are deposited in the AMNH. Types of species described by several authors are deposited almost exclusively in the AMNH. These include Michael Emsley, Rauno Linnavuori, and Herbert Ruckes. Author for whom many types are found in the AMNH include Randall Schuh, Gary Stonedahl, and Pedro Wygodzinsky.
