THE JOHN BURROUGHS ASSOCIATION INVITES PUBLISHERS TO SUBMIT ENTRIES FOR THE ANNUAL JOHN BURROUGHS MEDAL AWARD

The John Burroughs Medal has been awarded almost continuously for 83 years since the inception of the award in 1926 for an outstanding book of natural history writing. If you have published natural history books in the last three years, we welcome the nomination of books for the 2010 JOHN BURROUGHS MEDAL AWARD.

Please submit copies to the John Burroughs Association no later than October 23, 2009. Previous winners are not eligible. Winners will be notified by regular mail and telephone. Books received after this date will be eligible for next year's award.  The award is only given to the winner if she/he is available to attend the awards ceremony; otherwise, an alternate is chosen

A list of previous recipients whose books clearly represent the most distinguished American nature writers of the 20th and early 21st centuries can be found on this web site. The 2009 medal was awarded to Franklin Burroughs for his book, Confluence: Merrymeeting Bay.  Franklin Burroughs reflects on the human and natural history of the bay with insight filled with observations of its wild nature, scenic beauty, and the people who inhabit it.  He is being acknowledged as one of our strongest winners for his excellence in the tradition of the genre of nature essay-writing, which John Burroughs perfected.

We welcome the nomination of books for the 2010 JOHN BURROUGHS MEDAL AWARD.  Books are selected by an experienced panel of judges on the basis of literary quality, firsthand field work and originality, and of course, scientific accuracy.  To be eligible, books must have been published during the previous three years. In making their selection, the judges may take into account, not only the volume before them, but also the author's entire work.

There is a $50.00 per book reader fee and we request that publishers submit six copies of each entry, addressed to the office of:

Ms. Lisa Breslof
Secretary, The John Burroughs Association, Inc.

The award will be announced in March, 2010 and presentation made at the John Burroughs Annual Literary Awards Luncheon at the American Museum of Natural

History in April. A bronze medal is awarded to the author and a certificate of commendation is awarded to the publisher.  Early submissions are encouraged.
