New York State Department of Environmental Conservations Acquires Land Adjacent to Slabsides

New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation acquired nearly 600 acres of land that lies along the southern boundary of the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary and through which Black Creek flows, creating the new Black Creek State Forest.  Kathy Moser, Assistant Commissioner, DEC, made the announcement at Slabsides December 22 and issued a press release.  Jeff Walker, JBA Board Member hosted the gathering of several dozen officials and nature enthusiasts.

The land had been part of the West Park Winery and is important in establishing a preserved corridor along Black Creek from Chodikee Lake to the Hudson River.  We designed one of the new trails to connect directly with the property.    John Burroughs called this area near Slabsides the “Shattega.”  Hikers will want to explore the forest there and perhaps picnic where Black Creek widens and slows.
