Parallel Computing Facilities

The Museum has three main computing facilities which are available to the Department's researchers:

  • Two x86 processor based beowulf clusters
    • Circe is the first generation of the Museum's parallel computing facilities. It is a cluster of 128 dual 500MHz Pentium II computers and 128 1GHz Pentium III computers connected via an Ethernet-based network.
    • Demeter is the second generation of the Museum's parallel computering facilites. It is composed of 128 dual 2.8GHz Pentium IV Xeon processors connected via a fibre-based Myrinet network.
  • A 40 Sun Sparc processor based cluster
    • Generously donated by Sun Microsystems, this system is composed of three 12 processor SunFire v1280 servers, each with 96GB of RAM, and one SunFire v880z server, with 16GB of RAM. THe systems are connected with a fibre-based Myrinet network, making this an ideal platform for the large hydrodynamical simulations being computed by the Department's researchers.
  • One 28 processor and one 12 processor SGI Onyx main-frame computers
