The Hayden Planetarium is more than a theater. Encompassing the sphere inside the Rose Center, the top half is the planetarium theater, where we exhibit our Space Shows and Hayden Programs. In the bottom half of the sphere is the Big Bang Theater, a short journey through the beginning of time and space. Hayden also has an academic side, where we focus on public programming, the Digital Universe, and community outreach.

Scales of the Universe is a 400-foot-long balcony that demonstrates the vast scales of the cosmos, form the largest structures we see to the smallest, subatomic particles. Along the way, the size of various objects are compared to the Hayden sphere. For example, the hanging planets beside the sphere are sized relative to the sphere, which at that scale is the size of the Sun.

The Cosmic Pathway leads visitors on an exploration of the 13.7-billion-year history of the Universe. Walk the timeline of the Universe, from the earliest stages of development to the present day.

The Hall of the Universe is designed to be a rich, interpretive exhibit that explains the fundamentals of the Universe. The Hall is split into four zones, Planets, Stars, galaxies, and Universe, and uses the latest astrophysical knowledge to convey the nature of the cosmos. Supplementing these is a section on meteorites, life in the universe, and the AstroBulletin, an updated news and documentary service by AMNH.
