The Division of Anthropology is dedicated to the study of human culture and biology. Established in 1873, only four years after the Museum's founding, the Anthropology Division has collected over 500,000 objects representing the peoples of Africa, Europe, Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Americas. Over 180,000 objects have been digitally imaged and can be accessed through this website. Generous support for creating digital images of artifacts, documents, and photographs has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, New York State Council on the Arts, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
